Last week, Indiana football shocked the sports world by winning a national championship without a single five-star recruit. No roster full of superstars. No headline-making talent pipeline. They won because players were developed, coached, disciplined, and united around a shared mission. It was a victory built on formation, teamwork, and steady investment — not hype.
Healthy church boards are not built on one or two standout leaders. They are built when faithful believers are shaped over time into spiritually mature shepherds. Scripture shows us that church elders and leaders do not simply appear — they are developed, formed, and invested in over the long haul.
In Acts 20, Paul gathers the Ephesian church elders and reminds them of the life they witnessed in him: humility, perseverance, courage to teach truth, and integrity. These leaders were shaped through shared life and ministry. They watched a shepherd before becoming shepherds themselves.
Paul then gives their charge: “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock…to care for the church of God” (Acts 20:28). Elders are first called to guard their own spiritual lives before guarding the church. Development, therefore, must go deeper than governance. Elders must grow in prayer, character, discernment, and love for people. They are shepherds before they are decision-makers.
Steady and shared leadership does not grow by accident. It requires grounding in Scripture, spiritual formation, and intentional relationships.
Strong churches, like strong teams, are built through development, unity, and shared purpose. When we intentionally invest in our elders, we are not just strengthening leadership structures — we are safeguarding the church’s future.
Converge intentionally comes alongside churches in this very work. We provide free elder board training and coaching to help your leaders grow spiritually, lead faithfully, and shepherd well. If this would serve your church, we would love to walk with you.
